I am Julien Minet. I come from the Luxembourg province in Belgium, from the border between the Ardens and the Gaume. I have a degree as Bio-engineer and worked for 8 years as a researcher at UCL and now ULg - Arlon. At the moment I work in web development, GIS and digital maps.

Let’s build a community with everybody interested in OpenStreetMap!
We’ll be coming to get together again in the city of Antwerp and talk about OpenStreetMap and other interesting stuff with some beers or other beverages.
Everybody is welcome, whether you’ve been mapping for ten years, or you just encountered OpenStreetMap somewhere and you want to know more.
The story begins in February 2017 at FOSDEM (https://fosdem.org/) in Brussels; a cheerful Albanian delegation arrives on the Brussels ground. Among these Albanians, Anisa Kuci and Redon Skikuli, members of OSM Albania; since they are on Belgian soil, they decide to contact OSM Belgium and yaaay, some of us also attend the FOSDEM. First contact around a Belgian beer, our new Albanian friends announce that they are organizing an open-source conference at their home in Tirana in May: OSCAL (Open Source Conference Albania) and that we are welcome. Even if these Albanians are rather nice, Tirana is not really one of the dream destinations. I therefore answer politely (and prudently) that I will think about it. FOSDEM ends, weeks pass and I kept in touch with Anisa and Redon … I discover that they manage a “hackerspace” in Tirana and that they organize full of interesting events related to the open source (in addition to OSCAL). The idea of visiting Tirana is gradually becoming a necessity. And why not go discover this city and these people I know absolutely nothing about and take advantage of it to attend an open-source conference.

From 2-4th of June I’ll go to SotM-FR in Avignon to present a workshop about mapping Public Transport. So I’ll probably have a presentation ready about that topic. But we don’t have to tackle such an advanced and somewhat specialised topic.

I’m half German half Polish. I’m living in Bavaria in Germany. I’m a car navigation professional responsible for innovation management. Previously I worked with navigation maps and city modelling. Years before I developed specifications for 3D city models for the German government in Hamburg. Then I started to work for one of the biggest car navigation companies. I made the first trials for 3D data acquisition with laser scanning used now e.g. in Here products. I also taught for 15 years constructive geometry and technical representation techniques at the Technical University in Hamburg. My hobbies are my family, 3D modeling, painting, photography, geography and molecular medicine. I decided to use the polish part of my full name instead of nickname because I believe, I have nothing to hide when I map.

The last years, my main occupation was OpenstreetMap. I was also one of the co-founders of OpenStreetMap Belgium. I am a self-employed and freelance software developer, usually related to routeplanning.
Furthermore, we love to travel, our daily amusement is often a visit to a pub with some friends or having a nice dinner at a restaurant.

The 300 participants of the National Mapathon managed to get a lot of work done. Those tasks need to be reviewed and either corrected and validated. Or they should be rejected and feedback sent to the mappers, so they can learn from the experience.
Don’t worry, if you don’t have any mapping experience, everything will be explained from the ground up and there are always projects on tasks.hotosm.org that are easy to map.

NGOs working in the South need decent maps in order to reach people who need help. However, in many places the map is not yet complete.
That’s why we need your help!
We teach volunteers like you how to trace satellite imagery into OpenStreetMap, a free and open map of the entire world. Together, we’ll put an entire area of Central Africa on the map in one evening. No experience required!

The target audience is everybody! From hearing the word OpenStreetMap a few seconds ago to the total expert in no time. There will be someone you can discuss and have a drink with we’re an interational community speaking English, Dutch, French so come join us!
The best way to collect data for OpenStreetMap is by surveying an area. With surveying, we mean walking or driving around and taking notes of the features or objects you encounter. For newcomers it might be difficult to start with their first survey. There are as many methods as there are mappers, but it might help to get started when you have read at least one workflow. That is why I wrote this article. I will also explain how you can prepare your survey with data from external sources.
