This is an informal meetup where everyone interested in OpenStreetMap is welcome to join. Most often we talk about maps, cool uses of them and how to improve them. It is a nice opportunity to get to know the everyone involved and ask questions about anything OpenStreetMap related. Everyone is welcome, from the expert to the newbie that just heard about us.

The target audience is everybody! From hearing the word OpenStreetMap a few seconds ago to the total expert in no time. There will be someone you can discuss and have a drink with we’re an interational community speaking English, Dutch, French so come join us!
All around the world, people are making a digital twin of the world. They might want to know where the shops are, need data to train a driverless car algorithm, or want to know where the traffic signs are. This work is done by private companies, by government and by volunteers in crowdsourcing projects. Sometimes, this can be done by using satellite imagery. Sometimes going outside is needed. But very often, street level imagery is what is needed most. This allows to detect a lot of interesting features and allows to collect huge amounts of data without always having to go out.

The OpenStreetMap Foundation board has their yearly face to face meeting in Brussels this time. We will be warming up to the meeting on the evening before, and you’re invited.
In this workshop, an introduction to OpenStreetMap is given - perfect if you are interested but never got started.
We have a look at what OSM exactly is, why it is awesome and how to contribute. Afterwards you’ll know the basics to effectively use it, add data and getting data out with overpass. I’ll also shortly touch upon the tools needed to get a libre and free map on your website - no creditcard needed.
In this workshop, an introduction to the app OsmAnd is given. I’ll show you the basics of working with this
When this is done, we’ll get out the computers and try to modify OsmAnd to your personal needs. I’ll explain how to change rendering and routing parameters - the app will be just for you. (E.g. allow routing over ‘de knippen’ where you have access, avoid roads with cobblestones, avoid unlit roads, …)

I’m a computer engineer by trade, living and working in Niskayuna, New York, USA, https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/175479, west of the state capital of Albany. My OSM user ID is an Amateur Radio call sign, which is something that I often use as a user name because it’s generally unique. I’m not terribly active on radio any more, although I keep my license up. My most time-consuming hobbies are music, open-source software development, and hiking. It’s the last that drew me back into OpenStreetMap, since some of my favourite places have atrocious maps. (Surprisingly, New York State has some remote, and hence badly mapped, wilderness.)
